Here is a preview of my 2014 calendar. Each month has a different picture you can colour in and the best thing is that you've got a whole month to do each one. Every month I'll post a coloured version on my blog, so that if you get stuck you can get an idea of what it is meant to look like. £10 + £2.00 postage and packing. Please email me if you would like to buy one: jsb@joebright.co.uk

Sunset with dead sea monster
I found myself staring at Sunrise with Sea Monsters by Turner. I'd forgotten that I had seen it at Nottingham Contemporary over the summer and was reminded of it by an newspaper article. Here is the result of the inspiration:

Back to some drawing
With my last few posts being a bit designy, I thought I better get back to some drawing. This is the copse on the outcrop, scene of the attempted suicide of Lt Col W.J. Snodgrass in 1876 upon the discovery of the infidelities of a lover. The bid was thwarted by the foul, stagnant pool at the base of the outcrop which Snodgrass could not bring himself to pass. Leaving his rope, he went home for supper and lived to the ripe old age of 94.

Day Length Calendar
This is something that has been gnawing at me for at least 8 years and I have finally got round to producing it. In a way it is completely pointless but it is something that nonetheless piques my interest. It is not perfect by any means as I'm sure any astronomer worth their salt would pick it to pieces. But then it is not meant to be, as for one thing, it would be extremely difficult to achieve graphically. Well it might not be to someone else but I just can't be arsed....
It might be a bit small to see it in detail so I'll try and work out how to get a PDF of it on here

Lady Bay Festival - 7th September
Got to do some promotional material for the Lady Bay Festival on the 7th September. Castle Rock are brewing a beer for the occasion so I did some beer mats and the beer pump label.

Halves all the way...
Went on a stag pub crawl on Saturday. Got off the lines a few times but it only made the hangover worse.

New Tory party logo
The greenest government ever? Make the lie big, keep it simple, keep saying it and eventually people will believe it.

Quiet man of naked truth
Bit late on this with the story having been and gone but I thought I'd do something. IDS either speaks the naked truth or bare arsed lies. Either way he is naked. And saggy.
Got the brushes out...
And the paints, then found out I had forgotten how to paint. Here is the only acceptable one from several attempts to put up here. But undeterred, I'll continue painting until I get another one to post...

Dingley Dell
Remember the magpie picture? Well the brief for the the book cover changed to dingley dell, which sounds a little rude...

Ethereal night walk and cow shit
A couple of weeks ago, a few of us walked across the fields from our house to a great little country pub. There we ate good food, got drunk and then it got dark. So we had to trace our footsteps back across the fields, one of which contained cows. After slipping on several cow mines I spotted three majestic trees silhouetted against the summer night. In the ethereal light they appeared to move along side us like a benevolent guardians or guide us away like malevolent shadows. But, I had been drinking...

More fun with vectors!
Hot weather always makes me think of going to the beach. Along with jellyfish stings and sand in your ice cream there is often a cool breeze just to really piss you off...

Mucking about with Illustrator - Silhouettes
Despite the lovely hot weather over the weekend just gone, for some reason I decided to stay indoors and have a play with Illustrator. These are the results.

Thoughts on HS2
I'm kind of sat on the fence about HS2, modern development, faster communication, good for the economy blah blah blah. But in social terms, who will it actually benefit? And in environmental terms, it's going to carve open ancient woodland and once that has gone, you'll never get it back.

Book cover. Maybe...
This is a design for a book cover but I don't know what the book is called and I'm not sure what it's about. The brief was 'magpies' and 'seven'. This might not get used but here it is anyway....
101 Architectural treats of the A1
I look forward to this book being published. Most of the pictures will be photographs but one or two will be illustrations. Here is my input, Torness Nuclear power station:

Old Harry's Game
I love Radio 4. It's the illustrator's friend and I listen to it lots. Except You and Yours. Oh and Any Answers? where the Daily Mail has the cheek to telephone Radio 4. One of the highlights of Radio 4 is the comedy and Andy Hamilton's Old Harry's Game for some reason provokes strong images. Probably all the torture, hellfire and damnation.....

Murder in the woods
This is a cover for a book about a popular but notorious childhood game. The object of the game was to trespass on the land belonging to and avoid the clutches of, a pair of wob-eyed inbred siblings that lived on the edge of the wood. The game gained notoriety after a number of children disappeared....

The Mezzotint
I read a weird story the other night in bed called The Mezzotint. It is from a collection of ghost stories by M.R James. The next morning I woke up and this picture was beside me.....

Happy New Year?
I have been reading some stuff lately that has confirmed what I knew already about the Nasty Party and thought it time I got this out. Happy New Year indeed.
*If you're not sure what the volume reference is about look here. IDS is a tool. A grade one nasty tool.
